FPSI_Filt Project

The Ingénierie@Lyon and ITWM project was selected in the framework of the inter CARNOT-FRAUNHOFER 2011 programme:
FPSI_Filt: Modelling the interaction between a fluid and a deformable porous medium  – application to the simulation of industrial filter processes.

Objectives

The objective of the project is to perform research and provide innovative interdisciplinary solutions regarding the interaction between a fluid and a deformable porous wall, in view to developing an application to simulate industrial filtration processes. The scientific objectives are multifold:

  • establish rigorous models of poroelastic walls and interface laws
    based on homogenisation techniques;
  • use optical instruments to perform measurements of flows at interfaces and of the deformation of porous walls under the effect of pressure drops;
  • develop robust and reliable algorithms combining different curvilinear meshes and non-meshed zones to simulate the coupled problem of fluids and deformable porous media;
  • develop and test a simulation tool capable of faithfully predicting the filtration process in deformable porous media.

The final aim of the project is to develop a new software application called OptPleat.
The software will provide enterprises with a tool for assisting the design of optimised components for industrial filters (for example, the optimisation of the number of pleats), and for searching for novel filtration solutions in the many cases in which the deformation of the filtration medium plays a crucial role.
